€20 collector coin “Chemnitz – European Capital of Culture 2025”
The German government has decided to mint a €20 collector coin entitled “Chemnitz – European Capital of Culture 2025” to be issued 15 May 2025. The coin celebrates the city of Chemnitz being awarded the title “European Capital of Culture”.
The coin is made of sterling silver (alloy Ag 925). It weighs 18 g, has a diameter of 32.5 mm and will be made available both in mint condition and with a proof-like finish. The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€20). The issue price of the collector quality coins with a proof-like finish will be higher than their face value and is sold by the Münze Deutschland (Germany’s official sales agency for collector coins).
The coin was designed by the Berlin-based artist Hagen Täuscher.
The picture side shows twelve characteristic images of the city of Chemnitz drawn from architecture and history. They are placed in a circle on the outer edge in twelve segments. Nine of these form a “C” – an emblem famously used by the city and for its campaigns. Each circle segment is linked to a star in the greater design, thus conveying a commitment to Europe. The centre of the coin features a relief image of part of the northern borders of the city. This acts as a background for the “2025” campaign logo and the name of the city in uppercase.
A line separates this image from the words “KULTURHAUPTSTADT EUROPAS” (European Capital of Culture).
The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “J” for the Hamburg Mint, the year 2025 and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the words “SILBER 925” are minted on the coin. The coin’s smooth edge is engraved with the inscription: “C THE UNSEEN”.
