There was a steep rise economic output in Germany in the third quarter of 2021, the Bundesbank writes in its Monthly Report. Gross domestic product was up by 1.8%, therefore falling 1.1% short of its pre-crisis level in the fourth quarter of 2019. The Bundesbank’s experts expect that the economic recovery will probably take a breather in the fourth quarter. The Bundesbank takes a critical view of imposing a minimum wage of €12 per hour, which is an idea considered in the coalition talks. Inflation could temporarily rise to just under 6% in November.

In 2021, the Bundesbank registered approximately 42,000 counterfeit euro banknotes with a nominal value of €1.9 million in German payments. The number of counterfeits thus fell by 28.6% on the year, and the nominal value of the banknotes seized decreased by 34.5%.

Die Bundesbank hat im Jahr 2021 rund 42.000 falsche Euro-Banknoten im Nennwert von 1,9 Millionen Euro registriert. Das entspricht einem Rückgang von 28,6 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Der Rückgang sei auf die verminderten Absatzmöglichkeiten für die Hersteller und Verbreiter von Falschgeld zurückzuführen, erläuterte Bundesbankvorstand Johannes Beermann.

“Cash in times of turmoil” – it was under this banner that the Bundesbank held its fifth International Cash Conference. Executive Board member Johannes Beermann was joined at the virtual, English-language event by a number of experts, including ECB Governing Council member Fabio Panetta.

German economic output could grow again significantly in the second quarter of 2021, according to the Bundesbank’s Monthly Report. Rapid progress in the vaccination campaign opens the prospect of a considerable loosening of containment measures in the coming months. GDP could then exceed its pre-crisis level as early as the fourth quarter.

According to the current issue of the Monthly Report, in the final quarter of 2020 Germany's economic recovery was throttled by the higher infection rates and considerably stricter measures introduced again to contain the pandemic. However, in the experts’ assessment, the tighter restrictions have not led to any major setback; instead, real gross domestic product is likely to have more or less stagnated. The pandemic left a deep mark on German economic output in 2020 as a whole.

In the first half of 2021, the Bundesbank recorded approximately 21,400 counterfeit euro banknotes with a nominal value of €1 million. This represents a decline of 13% compared with the second half of 2020. This is due to the coronavirus restrictions, said Bundesbank Executive Board member Johannes Beermann.

In the Bundesbank’s estimation, the German economy is likely to have stagnated in the final quarter of 2019. The two-speed development of the economy continued, according to the latest Monthly Report.

Die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) begrüßt das Vorhaben von 16 europäischen Banken zur Gründung der European Payments Initiative. Damit soll eine einheitliche europaweite Bezahllösung für Kunden und Händler geschaffen werden. Vorgesehen sind eine Karte und eine digitale Geldbörse, die für Zahlungen an der Ladenkasse, im Online-Handel und zwischen Privatpersonen sowie für Bargeldabhebungen genutzt werden können.

The coronavirus pandemic caused a historic decline in economic output in Germany, writes the Bundesbank in its most recent Monthly Report. Both the depth and speed of the crash were unprecedented. At present, however, the economy is on a recovery path and is expected to grow steeply in the third quarter.

The German banks responding to the Bank Lending Survey (BLS) once again tightened their credit standards for loans to enterprises somewhat in the first quarter of 2021. Standards remained unchanged for loans to households for house purchase, and they were eased marginally for consumer credit and other lending to households.
