    Financial Supervision

    DE

A well functioning economy requires a stable banking system. Financial supervision is therefore responsible for monitoring credit institutions’ business activity and maintaining investor confidence. In Germany, the task of banking supervision is shared by the Bundesbank and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). In particular, the Bundesbank is in charge of monitoring the credit institutions.

The German banking sector is currently stable overall, with sound capital and liquidity buffers – that’s good news, Bundesbank Executive Board member Michael Theurer stressed at the digital supervisory briefing, an event organised by the Bundesbank and BaFin. Together with Annika Sattler from the Bundesbank, Theurer and BaFin Chief Executive Director Nikolas Speer spoke about the risk situation, simplification and proportionality. Participants from the worlds of banking and supervision numbered more than 5,000 at times during the digital supervisory briefing, which was streamed live.

Overall, our existing rules for banking regulation are not too onerous. But they can be fragmented, complicated and sometimes contradictory. This is what we are addressing with the High-Level Task Force proposals, said Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel upon publication of the report by the European Central Bank’s High-Level Task Force on Simplification. The report contains 17 recommendations on how to simplify the Eurosystem’s regulatory and supervisory framework.

Against the backdrop of mounting geopolitical tensions, a challenging global trade environment and demographic change, Mr Nagel urged for a clear European strategy to safeguard productivity and welfare over the long term.

    • The Bundesbank wants the EU to comply with Basel III

In a joint letter, the Deutsche Bundesbank and 24 other national central banks and financial supervisory authorities within the EU are now calling for the European Commission to ensure that the proposal on updated capital adequacy rules for banks in the EU follows the global agreement known as Basel III. More precisely, we who are signing the joint letter wish to particularly emphasise that the output floor for risk-weighted assets and the standard method for credit risk should comply with the international agreement. Deviating from the Basel agreement could have a negative impact on confidence in both the European banking sector and the EU regulatory framework. It is therefore important that the global agreements are met in full and in a consistent manner.

27.12.2024 Press release Deutsche Bundesbank DE

Paying with cash or a debit card is the cheapest payment method for consumers in Germany. Cash incurs the lowest costs per payment transaction, while debit cards are cheapest in relation to the amount of money spent. Paying with a credit card is in any case considerably more expensive. These are the conclusions drawn by a study entitled “Costs of cash and card payments from a consumer perspective”, which was carried out on behalf of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Development of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Germany by ultimate investing economy (UIE) between 2011 and 2023

When considering foreign investment in Germany by the country of the immediate investor, the largest shares typically originate from the Netherlands and Luxembourg. These are primarily holding locations through which capital is routed. An analysis of FDI stocks by ultimate investing economy (UIE) enables the allocation of investments to the country where the group’s headquarters are located, and thus to the country where investment decisions are ultimately made. This approach can significantly shift the regional distribution of capital providers, and Germany itself appears as a source country for investments.

  • About Carl Menger

Austrian-born Carl Menger is commonly regarded as the founding father of the Austrian school of economic thought. In his work "Principles of Economics", published in 1871, he argued that the value of a good is in each case determined by the subjectively estimated value attached to that good’s final unit ("marginal unit"), a circumstance which he referred to as the "law of marginal utility".

Other economists including Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Friedrich von Wieser, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich August von Hayek subsequently built on his hypotheses.
