Recent decades have seen the rate of firm entries and exits decline in the large euro area countries. This could explain the persistent weakness of euro area productivity. As shown in the Bundesbank’s latest Monthly Report, there are cyclical and structural reasons for the weak business dynamism – including demographic change and high levels of bureaucracy. The Bundesbank’s experts demonstrate that improving institutional and regulatory frameworks can help strengthen business dynamics and thus also productivity growth.

The Deutsche Bundesbank has taken receipt of a comprehensive study on the history of central banking in Germany between the years 1924 and 1970. The large-scale research project entitled “From the Reichsbank to the Bundesbank” looks into the history of the Reichsbank as the central bank during the Nazi era as well as investigating continuities in terms of personnel after the central banks Bank deutscher Länder and Deutsche Bundesbank were established after the war.

The German government has decided to mint a €2 collectors’ coin commemorating the Bundesrat (the second house of Parliament). It was issued on 29 January 2019.

The German government has decided to mint a €5 collectors’ coin entitled “Great green bush-cricket", to be issed at 7 March 2024. It is the sixth coin issued as part of the “Wonderful world of insects” series, which will see a total of nine coins with partially coloured motifs issued over the period 2022-24.

The German government has decided to issue the next €2 commemorative coin in its "Federal States" series as of 2018 March 3rd, this time dedicated to the German federal state of Berlin (motif: Charlottenburg Palace).

Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €29.7 billion in January 2024, down €1.9 billion on the previous month’s level. The goods account surplus increased significantly, but this was outweighed by a stronger decline in the surplus in invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income.

Der Bruttoabsatz am deutschen Rentenmarkt lag im Januar 2024 mit 146,9 Mrd € deutlich über dem Wert des Vormonats (81,3 Mrd €). Unter Berücksichtigung gestiegener Tilgungen und der Eigenbestandsveränderungen der Emittenten stieg der Umlauf inländischer Rentenpapiere um 22,3 Mrd €, nach einem Rückgang von 27,5 Mrd € im Dezember 2023. Der Umlauf ausländischer Titel am deutschen Markt erhöhte sich um 8,3 Mrd €, sodass der Umlauf von in- und ausländischen Schuldverschreibungen in Deutschland im Januar im Ergebnis um 30,6 Mrd € anstieg.
