Bundesbank’s external position stood at €878 billion at the end of November 2025, with claims from the TARGET2 payment system worth €1041 billion making up around 67 % of total assets. These are followed by international reserves, comprising gold and foreign exchange reserves, including the special drawing rights allocated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which account for a total of 25 % of assets. At 86 %, issuance of euro cash accounted for the bulk of liabilities. Deposits of non-euro area residents amount to 6 % of foreign liabilities.

The branches of the Bundesbank supply the economy with euro banknotes and coins, and offers private customers the opportunity to exchange D-Mark banknotes and coins free-of-charge and with no fixed deadline.

Overall, our existing rules for banking regulation are not too onerous. But they can be fragmented, complicated and sometimes contradictory. This is what we are addressing with the High-Level Task Force proposals, said Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel upon publication of the report by the European Central Bank’s High-Level Task Force on Simplification. The average inflation expectations of individuals in Germany for the next 12 months decreased slightly in November, to 2.9 %. In response to a qualitative question on inflation rate developments, the share of households expecting inflation rates to rise during this period declined by 7 percentage points on the previous month to 52 %. Average expectations for inflation three years ahead rose to 3.4 % in November (October: 3.2 %). By contrast, expectations for the average over the next five years remained unchanged, at 3.4 % (October: 3.4 %).
