€20 collectors' coin “250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth”

The German government has decided to mint a €20 collectors’ coin to mark the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth, to be issued on 20 February 2020. The coin celebrates the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the great German composer and pianist.

The coin was designed by the artist Hannes Dauer, who is based in Schönbrunn-Steinsdorf. The picture side features a powerful and vivid image of Beethoven in a pose that is open to interpretation. He is shown listening intently and digesting what he hears. At the same time, this gesture invites the observer to listen, too.
The reverse features an eagle, the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “F” for the State Mint of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart, the year 2020, and the twelve stars of Europe. In addition, the words “SILBER 925” are minted on the coin.
Its smooth edge is embossed with the inscription “WAHRE KUNST BLEIBT UNVERGAENGLICH ●”(“TRUE ART IS IMPERISHABLE●”)

The coin is made of sterling silver (alloy Ag 925). It weighs 18 g, has a diameter of 32.5 mm.  The mint condition coins will be brought into circulation at their face value (€20), and will be available from the issue date at the Deutsche Bundesbank’s branches while stocks last.
