The average inflation expectations of households in Germany for the next 12 months decreased by 0.2 percentage point in May to 3.4 %. They are thus still 0.7 percentage point above expectations from February 2026, before the outbreak of the war in Iran. In response to a qualitative question on inflation rate developments, the share of households expecting inflation rates to rise during the next 12 months declined by 4 percentage points on the previous month to 80 %. Average expectations for the inflation rate in three years’ time declined in May, dropping by 0.1 percentage point to 3.3 %. Expectations for the average over the next five years remained stable at 3.4 %.
