  • The Phillips curve

The Phillips curve was invented by UK economist Alban William Phillips, who observed a correlation between nominal wage growth and the unemployment rate for the period 1861 to 1957. The original version of the curve implies a trade-off between unemployment and inflation. Empirical evidence shows, however, that the relationship is not nearly as simple as that. Over the past 50 years, the Phillips curve has time and again been hotly debated, leading to numerous modifications.

  • Profile: Mark Carney

Mark Carney has been Governor of the Bank of England since 1 July 2013. Prior to this, Canadian-born Mr Carney was Governor of the Bank of Canada between 2008 and 2013. Since 2011 he has also served as Chairman of the Financial Stability Board (FSB).
After studying economics in Harvard and Oxford, Carney started his career at the investment bank Goldman Sachs before taking the post of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. There then followed a brief stay at the Canadian Department of Finance before he returned to the Bank of Canada in 2008.

Mark Carney was born in the small Canadian town of Fort Smith on 16 March 1965. He is the first non-Briton to serve as Governor of the Bank of England.

  • The Lehman-insolvency and the financial crisis

The insolvency of LBHI in September 2008 was the culmination of events that had begun in the summer of 2007 as a crisis in the US real estate market. This brought the interbank market virtually to a standstill. Within a year, a crisis that had until then been confined to the United States had engulfed the global financial and economic system.

  • "Brutalism"

The architecture of the Bundesbank's tower building, Cash Department building and guest house at the Bank's Bockenheim campus is in the tradition of classical modernism and can be described as belonging to the Brutalist style. The French architect Le Corbusier coined the term "beton brut", or "raw concrete", meaning the grey unfinished surface of the raw reinforced concrete, which he used as a design feature in his buildings. This conspicuous use of reinforced concrete became an international trend in the 1960s and 1970s and was the preferred architectural style for public buildings around the world, including Germany. This style is characterised by the visibility of the construction and the use of raw, unprocessed building materials, which are not subsequently encased.

  • The balance of payments
    The balance of payments

Germany’s balance of payments records economic transactions with non-residents. The bulk of these transactions involve cross-border payment flows that are settled through the banking system and see liquidity being transferred from one country to another. The balance of payments systematically records all transactions between residents and non-residents over a specific period of time based on the double-entry accounting system.

  • The economist and the foundation

Friedrich August von Hayek was born in Vienna in 1899, where he later studied law and political science. He joined the faculty of the London School of Economics in 1931, switching to the University of Chicago in 1950. From 1962 until his retirement he was a professor at the University of Freiburg. His most important works include The Constitution of Liberty and Law, Legislation and Liberty. Hayek was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974. The economist is regarded as one of the 20th century's foremost liberal thinkers.

The Friedrich-August von Hayek Foundation was established in 1999. The foundation is based in Freiburg im Breisgau and endowed by Wüstenrot & Württembergische AG. The declared aim of the foundation is to strengthen and promote the prerequisites of a liberal economic and social order, as conceived by Friedrich August von Hayek, at both the national and international level.

The foundation awards the International Prize and the Publishing Prize every other year.

  • The Single Euro Payments Area

With the birth of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA area) on 1 August 2014, the IBAN was also brought into being. This step harmonised and simplified the handling of euro-denominated credit transfers and direct debits, at least within the euro area itself. From the end of October 2016, this process will be extended to include the remaining member states of the European Union. It should be noted that the SEPA area also encompasses Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland.
