The German Panel on Household Finances (PHF) is a panel survey on household finance and wealth in Germany, covering the balance sheet, pension, income, work life and other demographic characteristics of private households living in Germany. The panel survey is conducted by the Research Centre of the Deutsche Bundesbank.

The finance ministers of the federal states met in Frankfurt am Main for a change. And for a very particular reason: this marked the 1,000th meeting of the Bundesrat’s Finance Committee. The venue was the same building where, on 25 and 26 September 1946, the “German Financial Council” convened for the first time: under the roof of what was to become the Bank deutscher Länder, the Bundesbank’s predecessor institution. 

Germany is facing major challenges. Smart, consistent and reliable economic policy could set out the framework and unleash the sense of change we now need, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel commented. In a speech at the Berlin School of Economics, Mr Nagel presented twelve points that he believes are key to boosting growth in Germany. For each set of topics, he examined four points: for an increased supply of labour, for the necessary transition towards net zero, and for a more dynamic corporate sector.

Bundesbank Executive Board member Burkhard Balz has spoken out in favour of a future that includes cash: Let us work together to ensure that cash keeps its time-tested place in an increasingly digitalised world, he said in his speech at the Bundesbank’s cash symposium in Berlin. In order to guarantee freedom of choice in payments, access to and acceptance of cash must be maintained, said Mr Balz.

Once a year, the Bundesbank invites guests from the spheres of politics, academia and society to the Capital City Reception in Berlin to exchange views on the economic situation and current topics. This year's event saw Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel welcome IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and author Constanze Stelzenmüller as special guests.
