In 2019, shortly before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the profitability of German non-financial enterprises was in good shape. Overall, German enterprises earned an average of 4.3 cent on each euro of sales in 2019, the Bundesbank writes in its latest Monthly Report. However, the coronavirus pandemic is likely to weigh heavily on corporate profitability this year and insolvencies are likely to increase.

In 2018, German enterprises operating outside the financial sector earned 4.2 cent on each euro of sales. According to the current December edition of the Monthly Report, this figure was 4.8 cent in 2017. 

The People’s Republic of China currently has severe economic problems to contend with. On top of that, relations between advanced economies in the West and China have worsened noticeably of late. These developments also present considerable risks for Germany. “If these risks materialise, Germany’s economy could take a huge hit,” the Bundesbank writes in an article in its January Monthly Report. The article explores Germany’s dependence on China, and is the first to also focus on potential risks to the financial system.

Aus der jüngsten Umfrage über den Zugang von Unternehmen zu Finanzmitteln (SAFE) geht hervor, dass die Umsätze der kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMUs) im Euro-Währungsgebiet von April bis September 2020 erheblich schrumpften.

As in the past, German consumers prefer to pay for most of their purchases using cash. This is revealed by the Bundesbank's recent 2017 survey on "Payment behaviour in Germany". In terms of volume, however, the significance of cash has waned somewhat. As a share of the combined value of all payments made by private individuals, cash fell below the 50% mark for the first time.

Despite the massive shock triggered by the coronavirus pandemic and what were, at times, very stringent containment measures, the number of corporate insolvencies dropped substantially in 2020, the Bundesbank writes in its Monthly Report. This was due in part to the temporary suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency, which is subject to certain conditions. German enterprises’ sales fell far less significantly than they had done during the financial and economic crisis of 2009, the Bank’s economists explain.

TARGET2 verarbeitete 91 % des Gesamtwerts der über Euro-Großbetragszahlungssysteme getätigten Zahlungen. Aufgrund der SEPA-Migration sank das Transaktionsvolumen um 2,4 %. Mehr als 56 000 Kreditinstitute weltweit sind über das System erreichbar.

In der letzten Mindestreserve-Erfüllungsperiode, die am 1. August 2018 begann und am 18. September 2018 endete, lag die Geldaufnahme im unbesicherten Segment im Schnitt bei 113 Mrd € pro Tag. In der gesamten Erfüllungsperiode wurde sie auf 3 960 Mrd € beziffert.

Many citizens have adjusted their payment behaviour during the coronavirus pandemic. “According to a representative Bundesbank survey in 2020, the importance of cashless payment methods, especially cards, in everyday expenditures has been growing considerably,” said Burkhard Balz, the member of the Bundesbank Executive Board responsible for cashless payments.

Since 2008, the Deutsche Bundesbank has been taking a comprehensive look at how the population pays, what attitudes they have towards cash and electronic means of payment, and what developments can be expected in payment transactions.
