Counterfeit banknote detectors range from magnifying glasses to UV lamps to electronic devices with built-in testers. When choosing what device to buy, it is usually advisable to give preference to devices which can check more than one banknote security feature.

Am 2. At first the euro was mistrusted, with many calling it the “teuro” (“expensive euro”). Around 20 years ago, 70% of the participants in a survey by the Institut für Demoskopie responded that they had “little or no trust” in the euro, which had been introduced in cash form on 1 January 2002. Today, 82% of Germans support the euro. The Bundesbank played a key role in the introduction of euro cash in January 2002.

The branches of the Bundesbank supply the economy with euro banknotes and coins, and offers private customers the opportunity to exchange D-Mark banknotes and coins free-of-charge and with no fixed deadline.

The April 2015 Bundesbank Monthly Report contains articles on labour market-related government expenditure, structural changes in the German banking sector and transaction-related circulation trends in euro coins in Germany.

The devastating flooding last year hit people hard. Since then, employees at the Bundesbank have been processing numerous notes and coins from flood-affected areas – most of them by hand. More than 1.5 million banknotes and 1.2 million coins have been submitted to the Bundesbank so far, explained Bundesbank Executive Board member Johannes Beermann at a press conference in Mainz. “In total, the Bundesbank has replaced cash worth more than 100 million euro.”

Cash continues to be the most frequently used means of payment in Germany, although cashless payments are increasing their share. These are the findings of the Bundesbank’s sixth study on payment behaviour in Germany for 2021. Respondents used banknotes and coins to make a total of 58% of their payments for purchases of goods and services, compared with 74% in the Bundesbank’s last major study from 2017. The lower use of cash was mainly due to the increase in online purchases during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at the Bundesbank’s fifth cash symposium in Berlin, Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann and Executive Board member Johannes Beermann stressed that banknotes and coins still have an important role to play in payments. The main features of cash are that it is quick, easy and secure, Mr Weidmann explained.

Am 6. Dezember 2022 verabschiedete der EZB-Rat die Verordnung EZB/2022/43 zur Änderung der Verordnung (EU) 2021/378 über die Auferlegung einer Mindestreservepflicht (EZB/2021/1). Mit dem Änderungsrechtsakt wird der Beschluss des EZB-Rats vom 27. Oktober 2022 umgesetzt, nach dem die Mindestreserven ab Beginn der Mindestreserve-Erfüllungsperiode zum 21. Dezember 2022 zum Zinssatz des Eurosystems für die Einlagefazilität verzinst werden.
