Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has been appointed to sit on an international board for the promotion of financial literacy among young people in Europe.

Introducing central bank digital currency (CBDC) is not an end in itself, believes Jens Weidmann. Rather, a digital euro needs to provide a clear value added to the citizens of the euro area. “CBDCs should only be issued if the perceived benefits outweigh any potential drawbacks or risks,” the Bundesbank President said in a speech at a virtual conference.

A stable currency for Germany and Europe – this has been the Bundesbank’s primary task for 55 years. As the central bank of the Federal Republic of Germany, it fulfilled this mandate for half a century with greater determination and success than almost any other monetary institution in the world.

Jens Weidmann paid tribute to the achievements of Hans-Werner Sinn, the long-serving President of the ifo Institute. Mr Weidmann told the audience at a symposium held to mark Professor Sinn's retirement from office as President of the ifo Institute that he had played a major part in shaping the economic and political debate of the past few decades.

The Executive Board notified the Federal Government that it had no objections to the Federal Cabinet’s nomination.

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann will become the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS). His three-year term of office will begin on 1 November. He is succeeding Christian Noyer, who will retire as governor of the Banque de France at the end of October.

The Bundesbank has held a colloquium in memory of its former President Hans Tietmeyer. Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann paid tribute to Mr Tietmeyer, calling him "the president who ensured that European monetary union was designed with the Bundesbank's tradition of stability in mind".

Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has been awarded the International Prize of the Hayek Foundation. The award was mainly in recognition of Mr Weidmann's commitment to stability-oriented monetary policymaking by central banks and his opposition to excessive government debt.
