Climate-related disclosures 2025: improved climate performance by Bundesbank’s financial investments

The greenhouse gas emissions of the Bundesbank’s euro-denominated own portfolio (euro portfolio) and reserve assets have been in decline on aggregate over the past years, the Bank reports in its latest climate-related disclosures. In this report, the Bank looks in particular at the climate performance of its own financial investments. For the first time, the Bundesbank is also disclosing greenhouse gas metrics on its shares of the Eurosystem’s monetary policy holdings of corporate and covered bonds.

German balance of payments in April 2025
In April 2025, Germany’s current account recorded a surplus of €23.5 billion, down €9.4 billion on the previous month’s level. This was attributable to smaller surpluses in the goods account and especially in invisible current transactions, which comprise services as well as primary and secondary income.

The external position of the Bundesbank, International reserves and foreign currceny liquidity of the Eurosystem
Bundesbank’s external position stood at €839 billion at the end of May 2025, with claims from the TARGET2 payment system worth €1067 billion making up around 70 % of total assets. These are followed by international reserves, comprising gold and foreign exchange reserves, including the special drawing rights allocated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which account for a total of 21 % of assets. At 84 %, issuance of euro cash accounted for the bulk of liabilities. Deposits of non-euro area residents amount to 7 % of foreign liabilities.

Nettotilgungen am deutschen Rentenmarkt im April 2025
Das Brutto-Emissionsvolumen am deutschen Rentenmarkt lag im April mit 115,9 Mrd € unter dem Niveau des Vormonats (137,9 Mrd €). Nach Abzug der Tilgungen und unter Berücksichtigung der Eigenbestandsveränderungen der Emittenten reduzierte sich der Umlauf heimischer Rentenwerte im Ergebnis um 16,6 Mrd €. Ausländische Schuldtitel wurden am deutschen Markt im Umfang von 10,9 Mrd € abgesetzt. Insgesamt sank der Umlauf von Schuldverschreibungen in Deutschland im April damit um 5,7 Mrd €.

External positions of enterprises from financial operations and trade credits
German enterprises constitute net debtors vis-à-vis non-residents: Standing at €1795 billion at the end of April 2025, their liabilities arising from financial operations and trade credits, exceeded their corresponding assets of €1501 billion by €294 billion. Compared with the previous month, this is a change of €1 billion.
