Statistics about payments in Germany serve primarily as an important data source for establishing, managing and monitoring payment and securities settlement systems. In addition, statistics about the structure and scope of the payments are used in tandem with monetary statistical indicators for analysis at national and international levels.

The Bundesbank will replace damaged euro and Deutsche Mark banknotes if more than half of the note is presented or it can be proved that the missing (larger) part of the banknote has been destroyed.

The digital euro is intended to complement cash and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy in payments, the Bundesbank writes in its latest Monthly Report. Both online and offline payments would be possible with the digital euro. To leverage new data sources in the field of sustainable finance, the Bundesbank uses innovative technologies. For example, in cooperation with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, artificial intelligence is being used in the project “Greenhouse Gas Insights and Sustainability Tracking” (GIST) to extract sustainability information from unstructured public sources and make it usable for statistical purposes.
