Capital and liquidity adequacy
In operational terms, ongoing supervision involves evaluating documentation, reports, annual financial statements and audit as well as inspection reports, requesting of further information and, on the basis of the data collected, assessing the supervised institutions’ current and potential risks. The workload also includes conducting routine and, in consultation with BaFin, ad hoc supervisory meetings with respective institutions.

Financial Supervision
A well functioning economy requires a stable banking system. Banking supervision is therefore responsible for monitoring credit institutions’ business activity and maintaining investor confidence. In Germany, the task of financial supervision is shared by the Bundesbank and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). In particular, the Bundesbank is in charge of monitoring the credit institutions.

Bundesbank Executive Board member Michael Theurer stressed at the digital supervisory briefing, an event organised by the Bundesbank and BaFin. Together with Annika Sattler from the Bundesbank, Theurer and BaFin Chief Executive Director Nikolas Speer spoke about the risk situation, simplification and proportionality. Participants from the worlds of banking and supervision numbered more than 5,000 at times during the digital supervisory briefing, which was streamed live. -
Bundesbank’s Forecast for Germany: Economy will gradually recover Government spending and exports supporting growth – inflation falling only slowly
The German economy will make headway again in 2026: while progress will be subdued initially, it will then slowly pick up,
said Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel, presenting the Bundesbank’s new Forecast for Germany. According to the forecast, economic growth is being driven mainly by government spending and a resurgence in exports. The experts are expecting GDP growth in 2027 and 2028 as well.
