The worsening energy crisis, a sharp economic slump and abruptly rising market interest rates could put the financial system in Germany under considerable pressure. “To ensure that potential stress is not amplified via the financial system, financial institutions must be sufficiently resilient on their own,” said Claudia Buch, Vice-President of the Deutsche Bundesbank, at the presentation of the 2022 Financial Stability Review. “Financial institutions should assess the impact of adverse scenarios. Given the high uncertainty, they should engage in prudent risk provisioning and exercise caution when distributing profits,” emphasised Bundesbank Executive Board member Joachim Wuermeling.

As part of the tasks it fulfils in relation to monetary and foreign exchange policy, the Deutsche Bundesbank monitors current business developments and analyses a broad spectrum of economic issues. The external position of banks shows the assets and liabilities of banks in Germany and their foreign branches and subsidiaries vis-à-vis non-residents. The microdatabase is based on the individual monthly reports of all German banks dating back to March 2002.

The new banknotes retain the basic features of the first banknote series with regard to the motifs and main colours depicted in the stylised windows, gateways and bridges, showing architectural styles from different periods of European history.
