Die als Konsequenz aus der Finanzkrise erfolgte Regulierungsreform verzeichnet große Fortschritte: Mit Basel III wurden die Eigenkapital- und Liquiditätsvorschriften für Banken deutlich verschärft, zudem gelten künftig neue Anforderungen an die Kapitalstruktur von global systemrelevanten Banken. Auch bei der Bankenaufsicht gab es tiefgreifende Änderungen – im November 2014 übernahm die Europäische Zentralbank die direkte Aufsicht über die 123 größten Banken des Euro-Raums.
